Purpose:

Defenders work on stopping an attack.

Setup:

Create a grid that is 15 yards long by 20 yards wide. Put a goal at each end.

One defender attempts to stop two attacking players from scoring.

Instructions:

  1. Divide players into three lines – two attackers and one defender.
  2. Coach serves the ball onto the field and first person from each line runs out and plays.
  3. Players play 2 vs 1 until a goal is scored or the ball goes out of bounds.
  4. Switch attacking and defending lines after a period of time.

Coaching Tips:

  • Keys to defending in a 2 vs 1 situation include: defensive player should “hold the center,” delay by playing the passing lane and the press when the time is right.
  • If the defender gets a chance to win the ball, they should take it.
  • Teach the defender to adopt a low, balanced stance and position themselves to force the attacker with the ball towards their weaker foot or towards the sideline.
  • Encourage the defender to read the attackers’ body language and the direction of the play, helping them anticipate passes and decide when to press.
  • Aim to control the attackers by positioning to cut off passing lanes effectively, while still being ready to challenge the player with the ball.

For Younger Athletes:

  • Focus on teaching the basic principles of 2 vs 1 defending, such as “holding the center” and delaying the attackers.
  • Allow young players to make decisions on when to press or stay back, helping them learn the timing and strategy involved in defense.
  • Provide positive feedback consistently, reinforcing effort and decision-making to encourage learning and development.

For Older Athletes:

  • Teach more advanced defensive tactics, like baiting an attacker into making a mistake or a less advantageous play.
  • Encourage a more aggressive approach, urging defenders to confidently take opportunities to win the ball.
  • Stress the importance of effective communication between the two attackers in a 2 vs 1 situation for better decision-making and successful outcomes.
