Purpose:

Defenders learn to prevent the opponent from playing forward and creating goal scoring opportunities.

Setup:

Create a field that is 30 yards long by 30 yards wide. Put a big goal at one end and a small goal at the other.

Three defenders attempt to shut down four attackers.

Instructions:

  1. 4 attackers versus 3 defenders. Attackers go toward the big goal. Defenders, if they win the ball, can score in the small goal.
  2. Attackers get two chances to score and then a new team enters.

Coaching Tips:

  • Defenders should be actively denying dribble penetration. They should also pressure the players with the ball.
  • Stress to defense – “make it compact, keep it compact.” If they get stretched out it will be easier for the attackers to break through. Defenders should look to hold the center and force the attackers wide.

For Younger Athletes:

  • Teach basic defensive concepts such as marking opponents, blocking passing lanes, and staying goal-side of their mark.
  • Incorporate fun and engaging defensive drills to keep young players interested, focusing on specific defensive skills.
  • Provide positive feedback to younger players, praising their efforts in defense to encourage learning and improvement.

For Older Athletes:

  • Focus on advanced positioning techniques, teaching how to read the game, anticipate attackers’ movements, and position themselves effectively.
  • Work on improving defenders’ agility, crucial for effective defending in a numerical disadvantage.
  • Teach about strategic fouling – how to safely and legally disrupt an attack without conceding dangerous free kicks or receiving cards.
