Purpose:

Players work on developing power and accuracy on long-range shots.

Setup:

Create a grid that is 30 yards wide by 40 yards long. Put a goal at each end. Then create a 15 yard central zone on the grid.

Players work to improve the accuracy on their long-range shots in this drill.

Instructions:

  1. Divide players into two teams. Each time lines up in the central zone on opposite sides of the field
  2. Each team has a goalie defending the goal at opposite ends
  3. The first player in each line takes a long distance shot against the other team’s goalie. She retrieves her shot and passes to the next player in line. Repeat.

Coaching Tips:

  • When kicking from distance technique is very important. Attackers should have knees bent, head down, hips and knee over the ball with body slightly leaning over ball on the kick.
  • Attackers should also be taking an angled approach to ball, putting their non-kicking foot beside the ball. Kicking foot ankle is locked with toe down.
  • They strike ball with laces at the center of the ball, follow through and land on their kicking foot.

Tips for Younger Athletes:

  • Ensure that younger players understand the value of maintaining balance. Encourage them to use their arms for stability when they strike the ball. A common mistake is not utilizing the arms, which can throw off their balance during the shooting motion.
  • Teach younger players to consistently hit the ball with the same part of their foot (the laces) each time. This can be reinforced with simple cues like “laces to the ball” to help them remember.
  • At this age, there’s a tendency to rush. Encourage them to slow down their approach to the ball, ensuring they have the right setup before taking the shot.

Tips for Older Athletes:

  • Challenge experienced players by varying the conditions of the drill. For instance, introduce a passive defender or change the angle of approach. This can train them to adapt their technique based on different game situations.
  • Emphasize the importance of a full follow through after the shot. This not only adds power to the shot but ensures the momentum of the body is moving towards the target, aiding in accuracy.
  • For older athletes, the mental aspect of distance shooting is just as important. Encourage them to stay calm and focused, especially after a missed shot. Reinforce the idea of “next shot mentality,” where they reset and prepare for the next opportunity without dwelling on previous mistakes.
