Purpose:
This drill helps players practice matching up with offensive players while developing defensive techniques to protect their goal from attacks.

Setup:
- Mark off two fields, each approximately 15 yards wide by 20 yards long.
- Place a small goal at each end of the field.
- Divide players into teams of two. Rotate teams in and out as needed.
Instructions:
- Set up two teams of two players on the field. The game is played like regular soccer, with the primary focus on defensive technique.
- Each team defends one of the small goals and aims to score on the opposing goal.
- Defenders should focus on proper speed and angle of approach when closing down attackers. Coaches should emphasize the importance of staying balanced and in control while defending.
- For younger players, focus on teaching the poke tackle to safely dispossess the ball. Older or more experienced players can practice using either the poke or block tackle depending on the situation.
- The closest defender to the attacker with the ball should immediately apply pressure while the second defender provides cover and anticipates the next move.
- Rotate players or teams after a set time (e.g., 3-5 minutes) to ensure everyone gets equal opportunities to attack and defend.
Coaching Tips:
- Observe the speed and angle of approach by defensive players. Encourage defenders to approach quickly but under control to avoid being easily bypassed.
- Reinforce proper pressing distance—close enough to pressure, but not so close as to be beaten easily.
- Pay attention to the defenders’ body shape and footwork, ensuring they stay low and sideways to guide the attacker away from goal.
- As for types of tackles being used:
- Young players should prioritize the poke tackle for safety and precision.
- Older players can use either the poke or block tackle depending on the situation.
- The defender closest to the attacker with the ball should apply pressure.
Coaching Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Encourage defenders to approach attackers slowly and under control to avoid overcommitting. Teach them to “jockey” the attacker and delay their progress rather than rushing in.
- Use visual cues like pointing to specific defensive zones on the field to help younger players understand positioning.
- Reinforce communication by teaching them to call out “I got ball” or “Cover me” to improve teamwork.
Coaching Tips for Older Athletes:
- Emphasize reading the attacker’s body language to anticipate their next move. Encourage players to force attackers to their weaker foot or away from goal.
- Focus on using block tackles effectively, including timing and positioning their body to win the ball without fouling.
- Teach players to shift their defensive stance quickly based on the attacker’s movement, maintaining agility and balance.
